Life Sciences

  • Impact Area

Dr Barbara Harvey Carroll spearheads our Life Sciences research commercialisation, covering a broad range of topics from biotechnology, therapeutics, and diagnostics, to food, environmental monitoring and the bioeconomy - enabling many of Dublin City University’s scientific discoveries to be translated into practical solutions to enhance health outcomes and deliver environmental sustainability nationally and globally.

For example, technology developed at DCU is being developed by Novus Diagnostics into a rapid test for sepsis, a disease which currently causes 11M deaths per year. Novus Diagnostics was founded by two former DCU researchers, Dr Elaine Spain and Dr Kellie Adamson.

Another DCU spin-out company, Remedy Biologics, is developing an ultra-high throughput, nano-scale cell screening technology for novel therapeutics development and personalised medicine.

DCU researchers regularly collaborate with established pharmaceutical, biotech and nutrition companies on a range of topics. Many of these projects are necessarily kept confidential. One public example is Dr Denis Collins & Professor John Crown’s Research Ireland-funded Strategic Partnership with Puma Biotechnology to investigate new drug combinations for cancer treatments. Another example is Professor Nicholas Dunne and Dr Tanya Levingstone’s long standing collaboration with PBC Biomed which contributed to the company securing US FDA “breakthrough device” designation for their OsStic product.

Dublin City University’s key research centres across this sector include:

DCU Life Sciences Institute

BioDesign Europe, in partnership with Arizona State University

DCU REACH Centre for Research & Engagement Across Community Health

DCU Water Institute

DCU RAPID Institute for Research Advances in Personalised Integrated Diagnostics
